Kirby in beretJeanne Birdsall's first book, The Penderwicks: A Summer Tale of Four Sisters, Two Rabbits, and a Very Interesting Boy, has won numerous awards, including the National Book Award for Young People’s Literature.

Her second book, The Penderwicks on Gardam Street, was published in April, 2008. It has been named one of Publishers Weekly 2008 Best Books of the Year.
